Media Opportunity Opens Up at Chamber
Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) is looking for two journalists/PR/ communications experts to work in their busy media office.
John Lamb (pictured), GBCC Press and PR director at the GBCC, says the roles offer an opportunity to work across the whole spectrum of media relations.
John, who is a former chairman of Birmingham Press Club and currently its vice-president, added: “We have an open mind about who we would like to attract to these hybrid-working roles but they will involve identifying, producing and editing news stories and features for our various news and media outlets.
“They include producing a digital daily news bulletin, our monthly magazine Chamberlink as well as contributing to our digital and social media activity.
“There would need to be significant interaction with all departments of the Chamber – including the executive team – in order to generate positive media coverage for the organisation and its 2,500 member companies. And, of course, the successful candidates will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the activities of every aspect of Greater Birmingham business and its institutions.”
John said: “Previous full-time employment or work experience within a news desk, press office, agency or media outlet is advantageous.
“Attendance at Chamber events across Greater Birmingham will be necessary as part of the role, including occasional early morning and evening events, with time in lieu offered for additional hours worked. Therefore, a flexible and adaptable attitude is essential.”
Key responsibilities will include:
· Writing and editing stories and features for print and online publications
· Work closely with all departments to identify and generate news stories for the Chamber/members
· Undertake general reporting assignments, including Chamber events and briefings
· Distribute press releases and handle requests from local and national media
· Contributing to the Chamber’s extensive digital activity (including social media, podcasting, and video)
Essential skills:
· Suitability qualified – National Council for the Training of Journalists diploma or journalism degree (or equivalent experience)
· Strong news and feature writing skills
· Keen interest and understanding of news and current affairs
· Ability to work at a fast pace and to tight deadlines
· Ability to develop and maintain key contacts and close working relationships
· Proficient IT skills
· A professional, proactive and adaptable approach
The ideal candidate will have a passion for print and digital media. Good knowledge and understanding of social media, podcasting, and video production would also be advantageous.
